Job fit: a real skills gap or an unanswered question?

Compare a role with your experience without treating missing detail as missing ability. Separate evidence, transferable experience, gaps and unknowns.

A missing detail is not a missing skill

If your selected notes do not mention hiring experience, that experience is unknown from the supplied text. It becomes a genuine gap only when you confirm that you have not done the work and the role requires it.

This distinction changes the next step. An unknown needs clarification. A confirmed gap needs a judgment about whether the employer requires the experience on entry, accepts an alternative or offers a realistic way to learn it.

A fictional example: coordination and hiring

The selected career fact says: “I coordinated three colleagues.” The role involves hiring ten people. Coordination may be relevant, but it does not establish hiring experience. Whether the applicant has hired before is still unknown here.

First clarify the applicant's own experience: have they taken part in hiring, and what did they own? If they confirm that they have never hired, record a genuine gap against the requirement. If they describe hiring work, compare the decisions and scale rather than assuming that any involvement meets the requirement.

Then ask the employer: “Do I need prior hiring experience on day one, or is training part of the role?” The question tests the entry requirement; it does not establish that training will be provided.

Sort the comparison before deciding

Put the role's responsibilities beside the experience you can describe. Keep direct responsibility separate from collaboration. Use four categories so uncertainty remains visible.

  1. Strong evidence: supplied facts describe comparable work and responsibility.
  2. Transferable experience: related work may help, with the difference stated.
  3. Genuine gap: a confirmed absence of experience or qualification that the role requires.
  4. Unknown: the supplied role or career facts do not answer the question.

Look beyond the title

A larger title does not establish a larger mandate. Check the reporting line, team scope, decision rights, pay, office expectations and travel. If the posting omits a detail, record it as unknown. Do not infer it from the title or company size.

Compare these terms with what matters for your next move. An attractive role can still conflict with a firm practical constraint. Conversely, a stretch can be worth exploring when the responsibility and support are clear.

Choose the question that could change your assessment

Take one requirement you have marked as a gap. Check whether it is actually absent or merely missing from your notes. Then write one question that would change how you assess it. In the fictional hiring example, clarify your own hiring experience before deciding which question the employer needs to answer.

For selected-text help, career-advice or career-role-evaluation can organize the comparison. In Codex, use the prompt below after the sharing disclosure and your explicit agreement. A supplied posting is not independently verified by the Skill.

$career-role-evaluation: Explain your sharing boundary first. After I explicitly agree, assess this fictional comparison: career fact, 'I coordinated three colleagues'; role requirement, 'hire ten people'. Separate strong evidence, transferable experience, genuine gaps and unknowns. Do not infer hiring experience or its absence. Return a provisional assessment and the one clarification needed next.

Keep the decision with you

berufa 0.2.0 provides nine selected-text Skills. They use the facts you deliberately share through your host/provider; they do not fetch postings, connect career records or submit applications. The assessment is provisional and creates no career decision or event.

The related Skills and installation page below explain how to start. Use the questions to check the role's actual terms before relying on the comparison.
